How to Avoid the Potential Dangers of Finding Friends Online

Many youths nowadays use the Internet to start and maintain friendships. If you use the internet you could be able to meet people from around the world-people you would never be able to meet otherwise.

In these modern times where technology is advancing, communication is finding new forms and many young ones are taking advantage of it. Making and maintaining friendships is easier online, and if you are shy, communicating online gives you a chance to plan exactly what you will say.

How about the dangers of online friendships?

To illustrate the dangers of online friendships or communicating with a stranger online: Would you walk blindfolded through the streets of a dangerous neighborhood?

When trying to find friends over the Internet, it is very easy to meet shady people-those who are strangers to you. Some people on the internet hide what they really are.

Despite of the dangers, of course there are times when online communication is appropriate. For example, many people, young and adults use the internet to keep in touch with old friends.

First, monitor the time you spend online, and don’t let it rob off your time from more important things - including your family and taking care of yourself.

Second, communicate only with the people you know or whose identity you can verify. Perhaps seek assistance from a common friend to verify the person’s identity.

Third, if online discussion turns toward things which are not becoming healthy, you should end the conversation.

All of us want friends and that is normal. It’s up to us if we choose to establish friends online, but be assured that you can find the best of friends if you choose them according to the standards of God's word- the Bible.
